Why I chose CBEE: I chose CBEE for a number of reasons, but most notably, I wanted to learn how to break down and solve problems. Most other STEM majors and coursework just focus on laying a foundational layer of understanding in a particular field, but engineering is more skill oriented teaching you how to approach complex problems, break them down, and work at solving them in a way that is not as overwhelming as it seemed at first. Since, I am going to build most of my knowledge and expertise in medical school, with undergrad I decided to focus on gaining translatable skills and the engineering mindset through CBEE!
Areas of Interest in Chemical Engineering: Everything biotech, but especially tissue engineering and organ-on-a-chip technology
My favorite thing about CBEE is: The people.
Advice for a new CBEE student: Two things:
- No major or degree was ever going to be easy, if it was easy then are you really learning and growing? So if you’re struggling, just remember that it doesn’t speak poorly of you and don’t let it scare you away!
- The second you start struggling, even a little bit, address it. Problems snowball, but if you can pick up on the issue earlier it’s so much easier to deal with. And like I said earlier, the community here is pretty great and you have a plethora of people who would love to help you address it, so feel free to reach out!
What I plan to do with my Chemical Engineering degree: I plan to go to medical school! I hope to earn an MD-PhD and do research in regenerative medicine.
UMBC Activities & Clubs: Meyerhoff Scholar, AIChE (ChemE Car, K-12, Jeopardy), New Friends of Yours (Senior Oriented Service Club), Physics Learning Assistant, Undergraduate Research at Jackman Burden Lab
Hobbies: Baking, Painting, Ice Skating, Playing the Piano, Reading
My favorite thing about the Baltimore area: The scenery, the ambiance, the abundance of things you can do!
