Assistant Professor Position in Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at UMBC

The Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at UMBC seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Candidates with research interests in all areas relevant to the field of chemical and environmental engineering will be considered.  We are especially interested in candidates who conduct interdisciplinary work and who will complement expertise in our department and college. Those who work on computational-related topics, mathematical modeling, and bioinformatics are of particular interest.   Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong potential to build an externally supported research program, an ability to address novel challenges in these fields, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student body. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in chemical, biomedical, environmental engineering, or a related discipline, and it is critical they are able to teach core courses in the chemical engineering curriculum. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2019. Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2018 and continue until the position is filled.

The Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) is a vital component of the College of Engineering and Information Technology. The department has approximately 300 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, 13 tenure-track faculty, and three full-time lecturers.  Current departmental research focuses on biochemical, biomedical, bioprocess, environmental, and water resources engineering. CBEE faculty members actively collaborate with researchers from nearby institutions including the University of Maryland School of Medicine and numerous nearby federal agencies. Faculty also participate in interdisciplinary research centers at UMBC, including the Center for Advanced Sensor Technologies (CAST) and the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE).  In addition to departmental space and facilities, a new Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2019 and will provide 123,000 SF of flexible and adaptable research and education spaces to support ongoing and future interdisciplinary efforts.

At the undergraduate level, the department provides tracks in three areas: traditional Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology/Bioengineering, and Environmental Engineering & Sustainability. All three tracks lead to the B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and in Environmental Engineering. The CBEE faculty maintains diverse, active, and successful research programs amounting to over $5 million in external research support in FY2018. UMBC is a public research university with approximately 14,000 students. The campus is located on 500 acres in the Baltimore-Washington corridor within an hour’s drive to many federal facilities including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. geological Survey, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Defense, The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, a 71-acre community housing over 110 companies engaged in research, entrepreneurship, and economic development, sits adjacent to the UMBC campus. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is five minutes away, as are AMTRAK and light rail stations. UMBC’s proximity and easy access to a wide variety of research facilities provide numerous opportunities for collaborative interdisciplinary research.
